Air Bed Mattress Construction
Most air beds are contructed in a similar way, using the same basic components.
The difference from one manufacturer's product to another's is in the design
and sophistication of each of these components, the reliability, durability,
and quality of these components, and how these components are designed to
work together.
All air beds use foam rails around the outside of the mattress
inside the cover. These rails are the skeleton of the air mattress,
giving it its shape and providing the user with the ability to
sit on the edge of the bed to put shoes on, etc. The foam rails
are crucial to keeping the air mattress corners square and the
air bed matttress sides straight and true. Most air mattress
manufacturers use a simple straight piece of foam on the side rails. Somma
air mattresses use patented "Perfect
Fit" foam
rails with concave sides that hold the air chambers in place,
and actually work in conjunction with the air chambers to keep
the mattress square and true. No bulging here.
Air beds, by definition, have air chambers filled with air to
provide the main source of support. Most air mattress manufacturers use a
simple baffled air chamber system where the air is distributed throughout
the air chamber as the sleeper lies on air mattress. The problem with this
system is that if you adjust the mattress too soft, you can get a "hammock" effect
where your hips are below your head and feet. If you adjust the bed too firm,
you can get a "tenting" effect, where your hips are too high. Both of these
positions are hard on your back and can lead to aches and pains you don't
want. The Somma air mattress is the only air mattress with our patented lumbar
support system designed to keep your body in perfect sleeping alignment no
matter how soft or firm you adjust your mattress.
All airbeds use some kind of pump to get air into and out of
the air chambers to adjust the firmness level and a control system
to make adjustments. Most air bed pumps are not that well made
and have a tendency to fail at inopportune moments. The Somma
Aire pumps are commercial grade pumps designed to last for 15,000
hours of continuous use, a number you will never achieve. This
means that no matter how long you own your Somma Aire air bed
mattress, you will probably never have a problem with your pump.
Most airbed controls are very simple, either an up-down toggle
type of switch, or a digital control that does not measure back-pressure,
only counting time. Somma Aire air bed mattresses come with an
optional (standard on the 5 Star) programmable didital read-out that actually
measures back-pressure, so you can be assured of consistency in your firmness
level selections.
Of course, all air mattresses have a cover made from a ticking material. Somma uses only the finest ticking materials in the covers. Take a close look at the pictures on this site of the Somma Aire air mattresses. You can almost feel the softness of the ticking in the photographs, and you can see the attention to detail of our workmanship, including the Somma name embroidered onto the cover itself.
